Some exceptions, such us iPad, remind us of the days&nbsp;when this was not possible. A few months ago <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Blit_%28computer_terminal%29\">.\/ had an article<\/a> about a Blit Terminal &#8211; claimed as a first multitasking GUI. Let&#8217;s name a few GUIs that supported multitasking in that era and their evolution: <\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>1979 (1980) <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/OS9\">OS9<\/a> (included a GUI on some platforms like Tandy Color Computer) <\/li>\n<li>1981 <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Xerox_Star\">Xerox Star<\/a><\/li>\n<li>1982 <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Blit_%28computer_terminal%29\">Blit Terminal<\/a> (allowed usage of many applications from the server at once on the terminal)<\/li>\n<li>1983 <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Apple_Lisa\">Apple Lisa<\/a><\/li>\n<li>1984 <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/X_windows\">X windows<\/a> (similar to Bliz it allowed multiple applications to run on the server and showing them on the client terminal) <\/li>\n<li> 1984 <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Apple_mac\">Apple Machintosh<\/a><\/li>\n<li>1984 <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/IBM_TopView\">IBM TopView<\/a> (multitasking for DOS)<\/li>\n<li>1985 <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Atari_TOS\">Atari TOS\/GEM<\/a> (kind of multitasking via special accessories)<\/li>\n<li>1985 <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Amiga\">Amiga<\/a><\/li>\n<li>1985 <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/DESQview\">Deskqview<\/a> multitasking for DOS applications <\/li>\n<li>1985-87 <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Windows\">Windows<\/a> 1.0 (tiled windows) &#8211; 2.1 (real multitasking)&nbsp; <\/li>\n<li>1986 (1989 first public release) NextStep (object-oriented, multitasking OS)<\/li>\n<li>1988 <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Os\/2\">OS\/2 1.1<\/a> (similar to Windows 2.1)<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>\nI see this as 3 different development branches: (1) development of standalone multitasking GUIs for personal computers, (2) development of server-terminal GUIs and (3) bringing some &quot;GUI&quot; multitasking functionality to CL interfaces. <\/p>\n<p>None the less, it is impressive what these systems were capable of, given the time and hardware available, while still trying to lower the prices for the masses. <\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Multitasking is so obvious today we don&#8217;t even notice it.
