Before commenting let&#8217;s look what we already have in the 3D.<\/p>\n<p><strong>3D interfaces have always amused researchers<\/strong>. A long time has passed from the end of 70&#8217;s when <a href=\"http:\/\/portal.acm.org\/citation.cfm?id=235742\">Dataland (ACM requiring registration)<\/a> &#8211; one of the first virtual 3D worlds &#8211; was presented. Since then <strong>3D interfaces ware used in several applications on personal computers<\/strong> (<a href=\"http:\/\/research.microsoft.com\/apps\/pubs\/default.aspx?id=64329\">Data mountain<\/a>, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.sigchi.org\/chi96\/proceedings\/papers\/Card\/skc1txt.html\">Web Book and Web Forager<\/a>, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.acm.uiuc.edu\/iCal\/projects\/oldprojects\/3dosx\/\">3DOSX<\/a>, <\/p>\n<style type=\"text\/css\">\np, li { white-space: pre-wrap; }<\/style>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Fsn\">SGI File System Navigator<\/a><!--EndFragment--> and its clone <a href=\"http:\/\/fsv.sourceforge.net\/\">FSV<\/a>, etc.). We have seen some <strong>3D desktop environments<\/strong> (<a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Microsoft_Bob\">Microsoft Bob<\/a>, <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Project_Looking_Glass\">Sun&#8217;s Looking glass<\/a>, <a href=\"http:\/\/research.microsoft.com\/apps\/pubs\/default.aspx?id=64327\">Task gallery<\/a>, <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/BumpTop\">BumpTop<\/a>, Qube, etc) which inspired a lot of other <strong>applications on mobile devices<\/strong> (iPod&#8217;s and iTunes album flipping for example, Vodafone 360). 3D worlds emerged in <strong>video games<\/strong> and transferred to the <strong>web<\/strong> (Second Life). 3D virtual worlds are used in medicine (exposure therapies), turism (virtual museums, ancient cities tours), learning and teaching and pleasure as well.&nbsp; <\/p>\n<p><strong>Researchers at Oulu University have<\/strong> already <strong>developed<\/strong> <strong>an exiting <a href=\"http:\/\/www.realxtend.org\/page.php?pg=main\">realExtend<\/a> framework for building 3D worlds<\/strong>. Now we have to wait and see what this collaboration will bring us. Maybe 3D video games on mobile phones (don&#8217;t they exist already), 3D interfaces (don&#8217;t they exist already) or maybe some sort of Second Life viewer for mobile phones (don&#8217;t these exist already &#8211; maybe not yet on MeeGo?). <strong>I really hope they will put together something good as it seams that the fight for mobile phone OSes is getting even more interesting<\/strong> (iOS, webOS, Android, MeeGo, BlackBarry OS, WindowsMobile)<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>The Register reported that Nokia and Intel are working (with Oulu University) on a new 3D interfaces and 3D virtual worlds for MeeGo operating system.
